Add A Domain
It's now time to add your vanity domain. By default you will have two types of domains in Microsoft 365: Vanity and Anchor.
- Vanity Domains are anything that is not the default onmicrosoft domain.
- Anchor domain is the onmicrosoft domain. Its important to recognize this if you ever need to use migration tools. Vanity domains and change at any time. The anchor domain does not.
You need to have access to public DNS to complete this step. Microsoft will ask you to sign in with your provider (Dependant on provider). Otherwise you will use a TXT record for authorization.
Start by going to Settings -> Domains. Click Add Domain.
- Under the Add a Domain screen, type in your domain name.
- Connect domain screen will ask you to sign in depending on your provider. Otherwise Microsoft will provide a TXT record to add to your public DNS records. -After the validation completes, Microsoft will ask if you want them to add the required settings automatically (MX, SPF, etc.).
Microsoft WILL overwrite records if you let them. I recommend selecting that you will add your own.
Afterwards finish the process. The domain is now available for use in the tenant. You will still need to modify your public DNS records.
Once you're back at the domains screen, click on your vanity domain and at the top set it to default if it isn't already. Click DNS Records and look at the required records.
The three you will need is SPF, CNAME for Autodiscover, and MX record. That MX record is the direct URL to your exchange server.
If you ever forget your exchange URL, or are working in a multi-domain environment and need to setup Direct Send for SMTP Relay/Printer/Application, Microsoft always sticks to the same format using domain-com.mail.protection.outlook.com
